Umbra - Ch2. Shadowman
The trees rustled in such a way that blanketed the night with an eerie coldness. The street lamps should have flickered on and off like they had for years, but tonight there was a shadow in the air. It was thick and looming, and people avoided the night if they could. Few souls walked the streets, but those who made their way home walked quicker tonight.
Hed spent all day at the office. His boss knew it was a public holiday, and he knew Jack could have used the day off to prepare for his exams. Those exams would allow Jack into the weekly planning meetings, and everyone knew Jack was a far better planner than the section boss. Jacks boss knew it too, and so he never gave Jack the chance.
It was cold and hed forgotten his jacket. Rubbing his hands together for warmth, he could have sworn theyd turned purple. They ached and cracked as he slipped them into his pockets, making his way down the stairs to the subway.

and the salt-sick trees.
Reach what lies near:
the fat-faced child, the sweet-soft lamb;
tether the tantrum, trickle the blood.
Offer psalms to what is holy,
whisper the name of what you love
as it bobs in the bleak mad sea.
