Umbra - Ch1. Mirror LakeIn the Umbra, there is an endless lake. Endless in distance and depth, the Mirror Lake brings an unnerving truth to morbid legend of a torturous underworld. Those who bring themselves to look against the surface of the lake are said to entrap their living souls beneath it, eternally.
Breaking the mirrors surface, he erupted from the calmness. Water shattered in waves all around him and his arms flailed for something, anything. Breathless and panicking, he found a hanging rope. Or was it thrown to him?
The rope was icy and fraying, and it stung his fingertips. His body ached. His muscles were cold and wrenching as they struggled to give him the strength to crawl from the water. As it dripped from his body, it felt thick and heavy and it stuck to him like blood. He screamed, vulnerable and dying again. Dying all over again, freezing.
Kneeling on the snowy, wooden pier, he was alone. It was quiet and there was nothing.
He was beyond the water. He was above the surface.

A Bloody, Stupid Miracle The day we’d cured the human condition was the day I put a bullet through my head and didn’t die. It was also the day I realized how scared I actually was of death, and after hours of muscle ache from holding that gauze against my open skull, after the wound closed and everything went back to normal, I had myself a good old-fashioned brainstorm. How ironic.
But when summer came, everything had fallen to shit. The air scorched my skin and parched my tongue every time I took a breath.
